Music at Caius
Music Teaching Fellows
Mr Matthew Martin - Precentor, Director of College Music
Mr Jeremy Summerly - Director of Studies in Music
Music is a large part of college life at Caius and it’s possible to get involved at every level, from playing in the jazz band or orchestra and performing in the informal Scales Club, to putting on a solo recital and singing in the choir.
Gonville & Caius Music Society (GCMS)
GCMS is a student-led society which organises weekly recitals, termly concerts, open mic nights, and other exciting events for musicians at every level within college. The College Concert in the Michaelmas and Lent terms is usually a large-scale choral and orchestral concert. The summer term concert, known as the May Week Concert, is normally a more light-hearted programme or takes the form of a show, such as ‘Guys and Dolls’ and ‘My Fair Lady’. There are also informal concerts arranged from time to time, known as the Scales Club Concerts (founded in the late 19th century) where everyone is welcome to take part under no pressure at all! To get involved, contact GCMS Presidents Lara Cort and Jacob Carey
Instrumental Awards at Caius
Caius College offers Instrumental Awards to exceptionally talented musicians at the college. Auditions for College Instrumental Awards will be held in the Senior Parlour on Wednesday 12th February, from 8.30pm. Successful applicants will receive an award of £100 and up to £1000 towards instrumental lessons with a teacher of their choosing.
Award holders are encouraged to take an active role in College music making. This could include a solo recital in the Saturday morning series and/or participating in the termly GCMS College Concert.
To apply for an award please e-mail Claire Wheeler, the Music Administrator, by 4pm on Wednesday 5th February, giving details of your relevant achievements and performance experience - we would normally expect applicants to be roughly grade 8/diploma level or equivalent - together with details of the piece or pieces to be played in the audition. The audition should last no longer than ten minutes. Candidates must provide their own accompanist where necessary and bring a spare copy of the music being performed. Please direct any queries in advance also to Claire Wheeler.
